My wife and I are planning our retirement locale trips this Spring and Summer with the island at the top of the list. We expect lots of mosquitos wherever we look but would appreciate locals experience with the best and worst areas of Roatan. I’m nature’s mosquito magnet so the less blood I have to donate to nature the better :wink:

Hello Bob,

Here are a few “big picture” items to consider:

  • The northern shore of Roatan has more sand, which is a nursery for sand flies.
  • The northern shore is also less windy which only gives sand flies full range.

For these two reasons, the southern coast usually gives you the best “chances of survival.” Now that we’re understood about that, there are several excellent repellents which you might consider. One such repellent can be found in our Travel Check List to Roatan.
